Is MBE certification worth it?

There are several federal and state governmental agencies that offer minority business enterprise (MBE) certification. And many agencies and private companies set aside a portion of their contract budgets for MBE-certified businesses to promote diversity. Getting certified could mean easier access to federal, state, local and corporate contracts. The benefits of MBE certification also include access to networking events, consulting services, entrepreneurship coaching and more. M&T Bank has resources and support for multicultural and diverse-owned businesses seeking certification.

How do I qualify?

In most cases, having at least 51 percent minority ownership and a minority owner active in daily operations qualifies a business as multicultural and diverse-owned. Specific qualification requirements will vary based on which organization is issuing the multicultural and diverse-owned certification. The National Minority Supplier Development Council (NMSDC) and other certifying organizations require an individual owner to be at least 25% Asian-Indian, Asian-Pacific, Black, Hispanic or Native American to qualify as a minority owner.
